Aqua-preneurship

DalAqua is Empowering Rural Communities in Kenya through Sustainable Aquaculture

Aqua-preneurship is a prospective strategy for enhancing smallholder farmers’ livelihoods, food and nutrition security, and youth and women empowerment in rural Kenyan communities. This innovative approach to aquaculture can provide a vital source of protein and income for communities with limited access to fresh fish, as well as employment opportunities for youth and women.
Aquaculture can contribute to the well-being of the impoverished through enhanced nutrition, increased income, and greater employment opportunities, according to studies. As mandated by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, aqua-entrepreneurship can also contribute to sustainable agriculture and rural development.
In order to alleviate poverty and hunger, organizations such as the World Food Programme (WFP) aid promote sustainable livelihoods and ecosystems, including aquaculture. It is essential to note, however, that smallholder farmers require the proper training, resources, and support to operate and sustain their fish farming enterprises. This is what DalAqua is providing to the rural communities in Kisumu through trainings and capacity building.

Youth and women’s empowerment in aqua-entrepreneurship can have a positive effect on gender equality and social inclusion. According to a study on gender and aquaculture in Kenya, women play a crucial role in the aquaculture value chain, and their participation in the industry can enhance their social standing and economic independence. This is in line with the Vision and Mission of DalAqua of Enhancing Food Sovereignty and rural communities.
