Kenya is implementing the Integrated Actions for Innovative Food Systems Across Rural-Urban Communities project in order to enhance food and nutrition security in urban areas with limited
land. By establishing links between urban and rural communities, the initiative seeks to promote sustainable agriculture practices and increase access to healthful and nutritious food in urban areas. This can be accomplished via urban agriculture, community gardens, and rooftop gardens.
Urban food systems can also benefit from the use of innovative technologies such as hydroponics and aquaponics, which produce high yields of fresh produce while requiring little space and water. Utilizing these technologies can alleviate the strain on extant agricultural systems caused by the urbanization and industrialization of rural areas.
The government of Kenya is committed to transforming food systems, and the implementation
of innovative food systems can improve food and nutrition security in urban communities with
limited land. This can be accomplished through the use of innovative technologies, the
implementation of sustainable agricultural practices, and the establishment of connections
between metropolitan and rural communities.
